Do I need a PSA blood test?

There has been a large amount of media coverage with mixed messages regarding the need or importance of prostate cancer screening and PSA testing.  Editorials have appeared in the New York Times arguing against using PSA as a test to look for prostate cancer.

A number of resources are available to help men decide whether they wish to undergo PSA screening.  The major points to consider are how often would you need to have your PSA tested and at what age should you undergo testing? what would your plan would be if the PSA was found to be high?  If it is high would you be willing to undergo prostate biopsy? If the biopsy came back positive for cancer would you become informed regarding your treatment options which would likely include active surveillance, surgery, or radiation therapy?

The American Cancer Society has identified the following resources to help you in your decision making (2010). The on-line video is very well produced and carefully considers the pro's and con's of PSA screening
